Dash related electrical problem

Postby Icedmunkie » Tue Apr 13, 2010 11:09 pm

Firstly Temp guage has never worked I am pretty sure this is the sender rather than the gauge
now my fuel guage has packed up which from reading on here seems to be a problems with voltage regualtor, tried wiggling it and it worked for a couple of day but now doesn't respond to anything!
Is there a way of checking this part is fualty?
If it is fualty anybody know the part number for one?

Also I have no dash lights, or did the speedo, fuel guage and temp guage not light up?
Bulbs are fine as checked these any other ideas?

Also on my dash there are some bulbs fitted but not sure what they do!
I have from left to right
Indicator - Oil- Bulb -Bulb then otherside main- Bulb- Indicator

Where is the charge light on the dash or was there not one fitted.

I would check more but wating for my manual to arrive!

There is a way described in the haynes manual to test the fuel:

To check if its the sender unit, first disconect the green/black wire from the unit at the connector on the tank. with the ignition on it should read 'empty'. With the same lead connected to earth the guage should read 'full'. If BOTH of these situations are correct then the fault (if any) lies in the sender unit.

Hope this helps! get yourself a haynes manual, really cheap on fleabay, money well spent :D

If you have no dash lights at all, first check the hidden switch. There's a slider switch under the dashboard that turns them off altogether. As you sit at the wheel, it's on the right underneath the top dash cushion.

What is that for? i found it the other day. Could you make it a 12v cutoff switch?

Not exactly hidden, just not usually visible. It's screwed into the bottom of the dash metalwork, just below the cushion part, roughly between the air vent and the instrument panel.

Your temp and feul gauges are linked together with a balast resister (plugs into the back of the dash on a spade system) looks like an indicator relay , that might be the problem with the gauges. Hope this helps Steve
is there any cure for buying vauxhall cars

Fuel guage now fixed took dash off and put bits back on correctly replaced a couple of bulbs and cleaned up the ballast resistor! Only part not working now is temp guage but thats I think is the sender!

Really good 300 mile run this weekend, nothing major happened too :)
