electrial upgrade

Postby skinner » Fri Mar 25, 2011 2:14 am

i am trying to put a GM alternator on my 65 viva , but the wiring, is puzzling me ?
what do i do with the regulator box (lucas) wiring ? disconect/remove/jump/reroute ?
the GM alternator has 3 wires a field wire goes to ignition,a light wire goes to the light on the dash,
the 3rd goes to the battery to charge as output, but the rest ???
i have a manual wiring diagram, but has anybody done this ??
its is a " - " negitve ground auto and alternator.
is there a easy wiring process !!!

I am assuming that your alternator has a built in regulator so it is best to leave the original regulator where it is, disconnect the D and F wires. Find the small brown/yellow wire that went to the D terminal, this comes from the dash light so extend it and run it down to the light terminal on your alternator. Pick up an ignition feed from the coil + and put it to the field terminal on the alternator. Finally run a heavier cable from B+ on the alt to the battery connection on the starter solenoid.

Cheers Tim

Magic blue smoke is rare, the less you let out the longer the car will last.... :goodideasign:

I had a load of that once, followed by some pretty red and orange lights. Helped to warm me up on the cold winters night while driving my Carlton lol. Should I have captured and saved some of it?

You used to be able to buy genuine Lucas Blue Smoke in a bottle on ebay for refilling wiring looms. :coffeenpc:
