Installing a cigarette lighter

Postby Retro morgs » Wed Apr 27, 2011 8:25 pm

I want to fit a cigarette lighter in my HC and want to know if they were ever fitted as an option or to other models and if so whereabouts on the dash? Just want to put it in the right place! Also, what is the best way to wire it in?

Hi,

A cigarette lighter was a dealer fit option located in the plastic panel to the left of the steering wheel.
Remove this panel, drill the required size hole and fit lighter to panel.
Link the illumination lamp to the side lights and take the main feed from the fuse box, (cannot remember off hand
which fuse it is) use a test lamp to find the correct fuse which is live when the ignition is on. You may want to include an in-line fuse for extra protection.

Refit plastic panel, job done.

Hope this is is of help.

When I did this a couple of months ago I was told there is already a free wire behind that part of the dash on a switched live circuit for the cigarette lighter. Can't remember what colour the wire is now but it has a plastic spade connector on the end.

I used the lighter from a Corsa B and made a hole in the recessed bit next to the choke. Don't know if this is where it was meant to go but it doesn't look out of place.

That's also the panel mine is in, but I've got my washer pump there instead of my choke, that's on the right of the steering wheel

That's where the lighter is on the Firenza, I think they were standard on that. Only thing I'd say is connect the illumination to the dash lights circuit, not the sidelights circuit, so that it obeys the kill switch if you want to run without dash lights for some reason.

People are lucky if I let them drink water in my cars, let alone eat or, heaven forbid, smoke! Just for satnav capabilities.
