I've just re-read the earlier post and realised if the light is on - lit - as opposed to always off, then it's most unlikely the INDicator wire (brown/yellow) is detached, if it's still thought to be from the alternator then it's more likely the wire is off the BAT terminal of the alternator, also shown, the absence of which would leave the light always on; this is the sense wire which detects battery state, and would be coloured just brown. I've an HB and not an HC, and my alternator is a recent fitment, but the other end of that - not the alternator BAT end - I've simply fitted a ring type terminal and connected it under the + battery lead where it connects to the solenoid, so it's always live and unfused.
