Water temp warning light

Postby vivapete3 » Thu Nov 03, 2016 2:47 am

Does any one know how the water temp light works on my 1971 HC Deluxe Viva? Also I"ve
just sorted all the warning lights to operate correctly on this model (except the water temp light)when I switch either indicator on and if any other warning lights are working at the same time as the indicator all the lit warning lights flash slightly along with the indicator light! Does anyone out there why this happens, thanx, vivapeteSLNO3.

Extra lights flashing when they should not is usually an indication of a poor earth - it used to be common in the rear light clusters on Mk3 Escorts, if you saw one indicating it would often be flashing a brake or tail light as well.

I don't recall having a water temp light on my old OHV Viva - is that instead of a gauge?

HC with a high temp warning light is a new one on me?

A guage, but never seen a light.

Hi thanx, thought it was a poor earth, yes on my early 1971 HC this being a base/ entry level model there was no water temp gauge, and on the replacement speedometer I noticed on the row of warning lights across the top there was a blanked off warning light marked "TEMP",so yes it appears it was instead of a gauge, cheers, vivapeteSLNO3.

Hi Fred, my base model Viva did not have a water temp gauge, it was blanked off on the speedo unit, on the replacement clock I noticed it had a warning light blanked off marked "TEMP" so I presume this may have been in place of a water temp gauge

My base 71 viva did not have a gauge , on the replacement speedo it had a blanked off light marked TEMP, so I presume this acted as a warning of a high water temp, cheers, vivapeteSLNO3

Hi Pete I can understand what you are saying but if you don't have a temp gauge there is no other indicator for water temp. If you look in the wiring information and electrical circuit for an HC it shows a temp sender detecting change in water temp driving a temp gauge. There is no optional warning light. I have looked at the face of an OHV instrument cluster and there are light positions which have nothing in which could house a temp warning light if there was some form of temp switch in the water system but as far as I can see Vauxhall didn't fit one on the Viva
Looking at the front of the panel I cant see any light position marked Temp - if you say this is a plate covering where the gauge fits marked "temp" that's all it is there is no warning light fitted.

Thanx for advice re "temp warning light" on speedometer unit, it appears what ever the idea was it was discontinued early in the life of our beloved HC model, so I"l continue attempting to remove a hexagon type nut out of the cylinder head so I can fit a water coolant sender, anyone got a magic wand to wave over a 45 year old (to loosen)factory fitted bolt as all my efforts have failed including my mega sized breaker bar, thanks for all advice, "vivapeteSLNO3"
