Chevette Lucas alternator onto Viva

Postby fuel » Mon Apr 28, 2008 12:12 pm

hey guys, my Delco alternator on my '73 Viva doesn't work anymore so I've got a Lucas alternator from a Chevette 1256, turns out the plugs are different.

Here's the back of the original Delco alternator, the connections read 'ND' and 'BAT' at the top, the ND has two wires going to it while the BAT has one wire going to it, there's another wire in that same plug but there's no lug for it on the alternator. The other connector is + and -, with only one thick wire going to +.

And here's the new Lucas alternator with just three wires which are unlabeled:

Any ideas how to connect up the new Lucas alternator?

Cheers

Hi

Old alternator uses an external regulator box.
New one has it built in. Two large wires go to the Battery + terminal
Remaining small wire needs to be connected to the Ignition switch Via the ignition light. This energises the alternator and make it work.
Check new one is a Lucas ACR series. I'm reasonably confident it is.

Thank you so much for that!

Wonder where my external voltage regulator is? I couldn't see one in the engine bay. Also, which wire would have ignition via the charge light would you know?

Is the ACR series a good alternator?

Anyone? I'm still confused as to which of the 6 wires going to the old alternator I need to connect to the three wires of the new alternator?

I don't know where the external voltage reg is - I can't find it in the engine bay, only thing electrical I can spot is the fuse box and the starter solenoid.

you only need to connect 2 of the up to your Lucas alternator.

you only need to connect 2 of the up to your Lucas alternator.

The thick wire that was fitted to the + terminal on your old unit connects to any of the large terminals on the Lucas unit ,
The small wire from ind connects to the small terminal on the Lucas unit.
Tape up the other wires so they dont touch anything ...........

Sweet thanks I just had to make sure - I didn't want to blow something up haha. With this new alternator having a voltage regulator built in, would that affect the external voltage regulator at all? I assume it would be feeding power to a regulator which has already been regulated.

Awesome that's what I first suspected but wasn't quite sure!

I'm too used to complicated Mitsubishi parts but when it comes to basic pommie stuff I'm baffled!

Cheers guys for all your help!

So it's all fitted and working! Together with my reconditioned starter and new earth and power wires from battery/engine/starter hopefully my Viva will be reliable over the cold winter.

Thanks heaps guys!
