Fibreglass bonnet

Postby phil dawson » Sun Oct 18, 2009 10:40 pm

Finally got a fibreglass bonnet on order.
Had been given a phone number of a guy who makes them ages ago, called him tonight, put in an order and he said delivery in 2 - 3 weeks time.
Will give you an update and pics once I receive it.

will he do them with "can am" style vents? was toying with gas struts on the hinges ala vectra, but i think it'll bow like gt500 ones... hmm sorry for the waffle, might pass, might not

Hi Spence,

Never asked about vents as I just wanted a standard bonnet but can give you his number if you want to call him and ask.
Gas struts would be good I suppose, why do you reckon they would bow?
After all, the g/f bonnet would be much lighter.

Hi Phil,

i can't remember what the shelby mustang has got, either springs or struts on the hinges? but because the bonnets are grp, and flex more than the steel version, this causes the bonnet to bow and curve upward between the hinges and front pins (they never follow the top wing line)

do you ever find that the standard bonnet stay is in a real naff place?? i run a vectra as my daily hack and the hinges seem very similar to the firenza items! worth a shot for what it'll cost  hmmm omega's on gas strut too  maybe digg them out and have a goosey 8)

looking forward to seeing your bonnet though, i'll tap you up for his number when iam closer to knowing what iam doing with my original 8)

grrr you,ve planted a seed now!!! ha ha

Hi Phil , is the bonnet going to be reinforced with the steel brace or just the mould of the bracing - if its just the mould , then are you having the hinge area strenthened with steel (& captive nuts) to allow normal bolt on fitment to the hinges?

Spence: Bonnet stay is in normal naff place for car of that era
You reckon that you could fit vectra ones on Firenza?

Jon: Good question, I asked if he could build me a bonnet that was capable of using original hinges and was told yes but not sure if steel braced or not. I'm assuming that there will be some sort of strengthening built in but I still have original bonnet that I could use the framework of if necessary....hopefully no need to though.

Thanks Phil , keep us posted on it - quality / fit / finish etc . with regards the bonnet stay - i considered gas struts but took the easy way out and just used a plastic mount bolted onto top of slam panel - just cut off that stupid curve at the bottom and the stay bar slipped into the mount !
No more chipped paint (and rust!) around that hole in the slam panel :D .
Had to shorten the length of the stay by around 2 inches though.
Got the mount off an old astra in scrappie - 50 pence

Hi Jon,

Just goes to show what you can find/alter to suit your needs from the local scrappie.
After all, we dont want to overly modernise our old vauxhalls, half the fun is the originality of some of the 60's and 70's stuff.....the youngsters of today may very well be astounded by the fact we have to manually lift our bonnets and balance them on some rickety old stays instead of pressing a button and having them automatically lift into place
