Front wing repair - anyone tried this?

Postby mazzo » Sun Jan 17, 2010 6:39 pm

Now it's not snowing any more, I thought I'd get on with some jobs on the car.

My front wing is missing some large chunks at the bottom (not unusual!)

Here you can see I have cut away the wing (green bits) but the inner sill behind it is also rusted (the rusty bit no less!), so have cut that out too, ready to weld in a replacement panel that I've made.

But I had an idea for the outside part of the wing. If I trim the wing all the way from the large hole to the edge of the wheel arch, I could weld in a sill.

If I use an offside sill on the nearside front wing, cut off the lip that comes on some of them, it looks like the profile is right and it has the wheel arch fluting. Just weld that in place - will save me making one.

Has anyone tried this already?

I haven't tried it, but I would think you'd have to remove and re-fit the wheelarch part of it - the front edge of the rear wheelarch that comes on the back of full-length sills is almost vertical, where the rear edge of the front wheelarch is quite raked.

You could probably use the other end of the rear wheelarch repair section, or maybe cut off and remount at an angle.

You are right. I thought it was too good to be true.

I have repaired the panel as best I can (before the light ran out and the rain starting).

First the inner panel:

Then the outer sill - not ground down yet because it is too dark!

Meanwhile, I started to fill the wheel arch. It was a mass of holes so I ended up chasing some of the rust until I got to solid metal, filled it with weld and then ground it down. The profile doesn't show up in the photo but it is there and pretty accurate thankfully.

Still a bit more to do. Then respray!
