Vinyl paint for dash top

Postby chrisdunham » Thu Jul 15, 2010 3:49 pm

Hi folks, the dash top on my HB is in great condition but it has gone black on the two raised areas (dont they all?) - well I would like to paint it but the interior is pinewood green and I am concerned about colour match....

Is there anyone that supplies colour matched vinyl paint?
Or do I have any other options?

I really want to keep it looking as original as possible

Cheers

No idea about the paint, but spotted your car at Billing, what a little beauty. :respekt:

Try a paint supplier and ask them, Im a painter by trade and pretty much all paints are waterbased now so you would need to lacquer that after and that wouldnt work on vinyl. It would crack up and make it look alot worse. What you need is more of a dye.

Failing that talk to a interior trimmer and they could make you a new vinyl part.

I've been cleaning parts of my interior with screenwash and a toothbrush. The passenger sunvisor was pretty black, but it's back to white again. Might be worth trying that where the raised bits curve back down and the black fades out a bit.

Didnt there used to be a product called Vinyl Cote. Could be used for changing the colour of vinyl seats etc, if it still exists and you can get the right colour.

I think i've made some headway with getting a colour matched paint from a chap who comes to our dealership to do dashboard repairs etc, I will keep you informed of progress!

2nd question now, how do you get the bloody dash top off without breaking it into pieces??? :?:

Thanks, Chris

Hi Chris

Take your clocks/ speedo, glove box & ash tray out & you will find some plastic nuts or wing nuts which hold the dash top in place, their are a couple of screws near the air vents. :goodluck:
