Door seals

Postby mazzo » Sat Oct 02, 2010 10:12 pm

It's raining - and the two HCs are letting in water. One through somewhere around the screen, the other through the door trims.

This is the early type HC door trim and it has deformed and doesn't seal very well.

Has anyone tried the type of door seal that you push onto the door surround (replaces the plastic or cloth covered trim around the door frame)? If so, does it work and what did you do about the bottom of the door where the kickplate is?

I tried it many moons ago on a HB. It didnt work very well. The bit that sticks out to form the seal sticks out too far and prevented the door from closing on to its second latch. Might be different stuff now though.

I have used the inner door frame type seals on Darth, and while you need to give the doors a good positive slam, they do crush down and seal. I used the Tex ones, soft rubber.

Small hint... If you find the door doesn't close properly, slit the rubber tube down the outside edge of the seal down the A pillar...This allows the rubber room to crush further thus allowing the door to close but not compromising the weather seal.

Sounds like it's very possible then.

Out of interest, what did you do about the bottom of the door where the carpet and plastic running board is located?

I ditched the plastic running bourds, and used the seal all the way round. Made new running boards, as such... Used black magnetic sheet to cover the holes. That way, they can be easily taken off for cleaning etc. Stop the rot from taking hold and all that.

Hmmmm. Like the idea of the magnetic strips - that's a really clever idea.

Sorry to keep asking Dan, but how does the seal fit at the bottom? Does it rest on the metal of the door or on the door trim? That's the bit I am unsure about because if it rests on the internal trim, it means the weather can get in behind the door trim and warp it. As I am about to recover all my trim with leatherette and velour, I am nervous that it will deteriorate quickly if it gets damp behind it.

The seal butts up against the trim at the bottom of the door, but is a very snug fit, and thus far I have had no problems with water getting in there... Certainly, no more than would have done with old weather seals, cos they and the plastic foot plates were going to stop bugger all.
