Micro blister paintwork

Postby escort89 » Tue Apr 10, 2012 5:11 pm

I have just come back from the garage that is respraying my car.
After having it for over a month they have found my paint is micro blistered, & what was to be a simple rub down & respray is now going to be a dip or shot blast!
it was rubbed down & etch primed but the rust is seeping through the primer in places...
Has any body else had this? :unfurlhelp:
Any suggestions on how to progress?

At this rate im not going to make billing which is not good. :( :(

Sounds like the shell was a wee bit damp when they put on the primer, I have seen it before and MY HA has the same issue around the arches now (mind you was painted 3 years ago now)

Don't be too worried about turning up to billing in a less than presentable car, we don't judge cars by looks (lies)  I have turned up in cars that are barely road legal before with hand painted wings and all sorts.

Shot blasting can be a bit violent for older shells. See if they can Media blast it if you go down that route. To my mind its their fault, they havent prepared the shell correctly before putting the primer on. They should be sorting it out.

I think people using the term SHOT BLAST don't actually mean SHOT BLAST its just a generic name for media blasting. Media blasting can mean anything from steel pellets which will dent bodywork down to soda ash which will just remove paint and do little else. My GT shell was Media Blasted with crushed glass with the outer panels like roof etc, done with the same media 'recycled' (so it was finer). The result was a clean body-shell with a slightly "keyed" finish that holds undercoat perfectly.

Acid dipping is again another overused term, it can mean any form of liquid stripper, applied to a body panel to remove paint. Some acids eat metal and if any is left in the shell after the rinse it can start to attack the shell after it has been painted sometime later.

The last and by far one of the best methods (in my opinion) is "cooking" where the shell is literally put in an oven where the paint and any filler sealants oils etc, are burnt off. The temperature is controlled carefully so the metal doesn't heat up too quickly or cool off afterwards slowly. The process takes a number of days. The process doesn't buckle panels and produced a perfectly clean shell.

I have seen all three types in the flesh and all have positive and negatives, but when I get to the HA its the oven.... The most cost effective for me.

Was there any blistering to the paintwork before the garage started work??
If not let them fix it!!
If they was it will need to be rubbed down well under microblisters and a sealer/barrier cote applied before etching,
They will be a reason for blisters usually conaminated with waxes/ oils / wd 40 / dampness/silicone in the air ect..... :goodluck:

Micro blistering only refers to water particles under the layer. As said if its under the layer they have done make them sort it. Can be a number of things but mainly it's due to poor effort.

It's a pain in the *Bleep* to get rid of. Pretty much is a bare metal job to make sure it's all gone. Why not get them to just DA it all down?

Also my brothers HC is going off soon for blasting. The guy there uses talken powder. Scary how much it takes off under force.
