HC sill trims & bonnet hinges

Postby escort89 » Thu Jun 07, 2012 1:31 pm

I have 2 sets of stainless sill trims for my HC
One set is longer than the other ... im guessing that the shorter ones are for use with spats?
As i won't be refitting the spats I was going to use the longer ones (about 2" longer).

Also, just been to see the car at the bodyshop & the bonnet hinges seem to think they are risers.
When the bonnet is shut you can lift the bonnet at the back edge by the screen.
Anybody had a similar problem?
(I hope it's just because there are no rubber stops on it- but pays to ask)
thanks

Yes, my silver HC does the same thing. I think it might be because the hinges aren't aligned properly and so they have some resistance to closing (because they aren't quite working in parallel). I haven't sorted mine yet  but just push it down at the back when I've closed it. But before the car was resprayed, it closed perfectly, so I am fairly sure this is the problem.

As for the stainless sills.... no idea. Sounds logical but I always thought they were the same size.

I thought the trims were the same size too. My spats have a slot to go over the trim piece. Either way, a shorter trim piece wouldn't be 2" shorter, surely?

Could it be that the bonnet hinges just need some lubrication, and the bolts need to be tightened? If the bonnet is actually pivoting on the hinge but sorts itself out when pushed down, that implies it's not fixed with all four bolts and that there's some resistance to the hinge closing.

If it's just too high up at the back, there is some adjustment in the hinge bolt holes (where they mount on the inner wings) and a bit more can be added with a round file.

i have odd spats so they wont be going back on, plus its one less place for rust to grow.
trims i have are off a 72 and 79 car, both 4 doors. will have to do some close up picture research...
