Question #2 - side trim

Postby jpsmit » Sun Jan 26, 2014 3:44 pm

As in Question number one, I want to get the trim sorted before I replace the door glass. From the pictures you can see what I have - the body shop (before I got it) repainted with the existing clips in place - however, there are a few "posts" and a hole or two. I also have just one "clip." (last pic)

How do I proceed? Are the clips available? How are they inserted? are they one piece or two? any opinions, answers or suggestions gratefully received!

cheers all

Oh, and I presume the trim just "snaps" on? Is it from the top down, the bottom up or does it matter? and, how does it come off as I will be stripping a car before too very long. thanks!

Steve, they do indeed seem the same - can anyone confirm this? Also, how do they install?

You fit them by drilling a hole in the panel the same size as the largest round end and when fitted you lightly tap the other end with a hammer and it tightens in!!

When you are tapping in the round pin through the clip on a large panel which is not braced you get a lot of bounce and the pin is difficult to send home. Get someone to hold a heavy lump hammer or something similar as near as possible to the drilled hole at the back of the panel, this makes the job much easier.

Alan.

Thanks Alan, and is it safe to assume that I can just pop the old pins out from the back?

Yes the old clip pins can be punched out from behind the panel and if still intact, used again. Good luck.

Update: I contacted the seller and he says the HA clips do not fit but Triumph Dolomite clips do. I have ordered a set and will keep you posted. My only concern is that the Vauxhall will reject the 'umph parts and spit the trim off at speed! :D

here's hoping!

I picked up a bag of clips that fit, from an Autojumble somewhere, can't remember when, but they were in a Chrysler/Talbot bag, so I assume they were Avenger or possibly Imp or something!
Worth a try down that line.
