Thanks for the drawing!

It looks as though this tool (expertly illustrated) is a puller tool rather than a pusher. I'm guessing it would be used like this one - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-VS801- ... 5d4f768ae9

If you scroll down through the advert there's a small illustration showing it in use at the bottom (this tool is for hollow pins. Viva HB hinge pins are solid with a pin head that the 'U' end of the tool would fit under).

Thanks for the drawing complement lol
Yes you use the 10 preluding pin to knock down or up the door pin, then as the drawing slide the u shape over the head of the pin and knock out

I have been meaning to make up a tool for a while.
I was working at a Porsche Specialist last time I was home and the body shop made a tool out of an old 911 torsion bar spring. It was super strong and comfortable to hold. They had also linished a flat section in the best spot so it was easy to hit.

They had these flexible plastic cards that were made from thick placemats so you didn't damage the surrounding paintwork when you hit it down or up.

He let me use it on a rusty 911 that had come from Canada and it came out quite easily. Anything round like an old axle or driveshaft would be a perfect.

Keep us up to date as to what you end up using. :goodluck:

well it fitted a treat after getting the bolt length right and modifying a 17mm spanner to fit in and be able to turn the nut, (not the bolt)

So after a bit of faffing around i started loading on the pressure, it was all going quite well until the welded U section snapped at the weld.
I was well aware that it may well happen but gave it a try anyway, i wanted to do this cost effectively, anyway im sure this will work i just need to speak to my engineer mate and see if the threade puller and u section can be made in one piece.

Cracking tool that.
The club I used to be in had a club tool bank where tools that you only use on the odd occasion where, any member could borrow the tool for the cost of the postage plus £1 for small tools, £3 for medium tools, £5 for the engine hoist.
Most of the time people made the tools like this door pin puller or donated them.
The amount of miles the engine hoist did being exchanged at shows or meets was amazing.
Worked really well and made the club extra money.
Might work here ?

I think we used to lend tools out, or at least Adrian did, but many never got returned.

I have bought one of these from the States. I haven't tried it yet. I will report back to you when I have -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Automotive-Do ... 1383802602?

I decided to risk the £35 purchase price. If I can't make it work I can always put it back on fleabay, but if it works it could prove very helpful for us Viva owners! :D

The tool listed on page 35 of the Vauxhall body manual is D1162.

It is a high tensile round bar with a machined section at one end to fit around the hinge pin shaft between the pin head and hinge bracket. You held the bar and whacked it with a big hammer to remove the pin. The other end of the bar had a flat machined on one side to place on the head of the pin to bash it back in place. This all worked OK on newer cars but is a bit of a pig on older cars where the pin has worn over time and/or corrosion has set in.
I gave a new pin and a copy from the page in the manual of the tool to a friend who made one for me, worked a treat. I found that an application of plusgas/duckoil or similar to the hinge in question for a few days helped the removal situation.

I struggle with uploading pics to this site, if you want a pic of the relevant pages from the manual and of the tool then pm me and I will send an e-mail with pics.
