Welding Advice

Postby hca » Wed Sep 09, 2015 4:04 pm

Hi all. Finally got hold of some funds so I can address the ever-worsening rust on my HC. Just wondering if anyone may be able to give me some advice so I have a rough idea of what I'm talking about when I approach the local welders.

I've attached 2 photos - one of the rear near side wheel arch, and one of the near side front wing / bonnet.

If anyone can let me know the best way to treat this, or if I just gotta bite the bullet and buy a whole spare wing from somewhere, I'd appreciate the knowledge!

Thanks in advance.

The best way to deal with it is to cut it out and weld fresh steel in its place, not a problem for a welder (bodyshop) that know what their doing.
Might be an idea finding out if any of your local bodyshops (if thats where your going) deal with classic cars as modern stuff doesn't need welding, so they might not be up to speed on a good job. :D

If that's all that's wrong with the front wing, it could probably be patched without any trouble by a decent bodywork place. Often these blemishes expand a little once you start removing paint and getting back to bare metal.

To an extent the same applies to the lower rear quarter - it's a more complex shape, but a decent bodywork person should be able to make it pretty well, again, depending on how far the damage goes once it's stripped back. It's hard to see just how far up the wheelarch the rust goes. I might have a suitable panel for that bit, I can't remember what side it's for.

Ah, thanks gentlemen. Even searching google for "bodyshop" instead of "welder" is giving me more options! Getting thicker with age it would seem!

Gonna phone around and see who's comfortable with a classic, and go from there.

Thanks again for the advice. I'll let you know how it goes.

If you can visit the workshop and see the work that they are currently doing all the better.

Get in touch with any local car clubs, see who they use.
