Back and front screen replacement

Postby Mike Attew » Tue Jun 12, 2018 9:41 pm

Are there any tips on replacing the front and back screens, I just tried applying sealant and stringing the front screen in and made a big mess. The stuff went everywhere
Can the rubber and screen be put in by string and then sealant applied under the lip before the trim is applied? or apply sealant, put the rubber round then fit the screens from the outside although I would imagine that would be difficult on the back.
I presume sealant is used because of the rake and the potential to leak, I fitted a screen to my Moggy with no sealant and it's fine.
At present I am scratching my head.

I did my front screen took about 2hrs in total, clean off all old sealant, I used 3mm paracord and some washing up liquid in a spray bottle. The corners were a little hard to do so really a 2 person job as you have to push on the outside while pulling the cord from the inside (I say pull more small circular motions while pulling, stops the rubber ripping. Leave to dry for a few days then apply the sealant under the outer lip. When fitting the chrome plastic trim soak it in warm water first softens the plastic. There are a lot of guides on YouTube for fitting windscreens.

Thanks for that, it's what I was thinking of doing, hand books say apply sealant prior to fitting but it was too messy. Now I have everything clean again will give it a go.

I didn't put any sealant around the windows in the Firenza when that went back together, and it's been fine. It also doesn't have the "infill" strip on the rubbers. It was rebuilt in 1998, has stood through more than its fair share of Tatton Park downpours, and when I replaced the carpet a few years back it was all dry underneath.

For the front and rear screens, it should be possible to lift the edge of the rubber and carefully run the sealant gun along to fill the gap. I thought about the best way when I put the hatch together, and every way that included sealant before the windows go in sounded really messy. No option on the rear quarter glass, of course, as the metal frame prevents access after fitting.

I have completed the front and back screens, I used water and Carnauba car wash in the end, worked a treat.

Started to fit the quarter lights and the problems started, the rubber lip split off the drivers side. Nobody makes these and can't find any at present. East Kent Trim don't do them as they said the cost would be too high to manufacture.

Yes, the moulded corners need a special mould per corner, I heard one quote for £4k each per corner mould! HC estate rear screen rubbers are in the same boat.

Some good news, mine had split top to bottom so I used some Gorilla super glue, stuck it back in place and salvaged it. I didn't use sealant as I struggled with string as it was an old seal but with some trim tools eventually popped it in.
:D

I was on the verge of trying windscreen rubber and just putting the chrome trim round to see if that would work
