Steering Rack Pinion Bearings

Postby chrismc » Mon Jun 02, 2014 11:45 am

I am currently rebuilding a spare steering rack I have and also fitting a quick rack kit to it. The original pinion bearings are shot.

I have been to a local bearing specialist and ha said they were not a standard size..

Does anybody know if these are still available or am I going to have to make up some bronze ones

Thanks Chris

There are 2 types of rack fitted to the HC range. If you're fitting a quick rack kit I assume it is a CAM GEARS rack. The other type is made by Burman and quick rack kits were never made for those as far as I know.

The Burman rack has two identical gators while the Cam Gears has a large one and a small one. However I have a Cam Gears rack and someone had fitted it with Burman gators! It leaked a bit mind you

Can you post the information stamped onto the top of that bearing? Might be possible to find an equivalent. Normal bearing person probably won't have it listed any more so it will be down to a specialist.

I have some genuine bearings in stock so I might be able to help. Just confirm if it is Camgear or Burman or whatever they used.

Can you post the numbers anyway if you get a chance? I have a list of bearing numbers I keep with me at autojumbles in case the people with boxes of stuff but no look-up lists have any.
