An 015 battery is a good choice provided you get a full `015` spec- nominally 45Ah and 340CCA (cold cranking amperes). 015`s were not so easy to get for a few years and the 038, which is the same physical size/shape became the norm but only 35Ah and 265CCA, and would soon show it`s shortcomings on a reluctant start after a lay-up (i.e mechanical fuel pump and/or cold weather)! 015`s are now quite easy to get and being narrow are a tidy fit with the terminals the right way around.

£45 isn't bad for a Halfords battery - I paid £51 for a Euro Car Parts one last year for my Firenza.

As Kraken pointed out, this one seems the best spec, and is alot cheaper than others on ebay so it makes sense.

Just quickly resurrecting this thread - was at Home Depot today and they had great deals on batteries - but, am not sure whether the sizes you describe are the same in the colonies?

the group size they were describing were numbers like 75, 65, 78 - are there dimensions that people have or comparables? forgive me for sounding completely dense on this one.

thanks!

I found this chart, but interestingly it doesn't list the 015 battery mentioned earlier in the thread. Do any of the codes you have match anything on here? https://www.puretyre.co.uk/car-battery- ... ion-chart/

Here'a an 038 from the same website.

Technical Specification
Terminals Positive Front Left Standard
Battery.jpg
Battery.jpg (5.4 KiB) Viewed 1089 times

Brand Lucas
Range Lucas Premium
Voltage 12 Volts
Technology Wet
Capacity (C20) 36 Ah
CCA (EN) 310 A
Length 245 mm
Width 135 mm
Height inc. terms 200 mm
Barcode (EAN) 5060196067244

I note that the spec show that there is very little to choose between the 2 sizes these days. In the past the 015 was substantially more powerful with a much higher AH and CCA rating than the 038. Whether the 038 rating has risen or the 015 fallen I don't know. Also the 015 used to have a larger physical size but these now look the same.

However, i did just find this 038 battery with these dimensions which are more like the ones I remember.

Brand Banner Batteries
Capacity (C20) 38 Ah
CCA (EN) 300 A
Length 239 mm
Width 135 mm
Height inc. terms 200 mm
Height exc. terms 179 mm

Thank you so very much for this! copied it all down and went to the store where I found; 1. the batteries picked over, 2. the sale over and 3. nothing left that would do.

ah well. next time!
