Gearbox - reconditioning?

Postby Stu » Wed Aug 23, 2017 11:23 am

Hi all,

Some may remember my topic recently about an OHV clutch change and possible wrong parts (Link)
Thanks for all who helped work out the details there.

My query now is about the Gearbox, as I have taken the car to a more competent mechanic and he discovered the knocking/rattling noise was not from the thrust bearing but the layshaft in the box. :(

Can anyone advise what the best course of action is, or rather what options I have? I'm guessing ideally someone who knows the box and able to recondition it, replacing parts as required?

Many years ago I obtained a replacement box from eBay but a specialist told me the box was in not great shape. Therefore I may have some usable spare parts and who knows, maybe the layshaft is perfectly fine in that box.
I'd rather once and for all get a box in as good a condition as possible by fully reconditioning, but don't know where to start. It's not something I'd like to take on myself.

So, any advice, help or pointing in the right direction would be thankfully appreciated!
Cheers,
Stu

Thanks to Mike's expertise I was able to get the required bits for my gearbox, however with a little embarrassment (looking at the date above!) I'm only just in a position of getting round to trying to get it rebuilt!

Unfortunately the guy I had in mind to do it for me is a dead end and the next nearest gearbox specialist wants a very large amount of money for a complete stripdown and rebuild - above and beyond what I was looking at. :(

So, my question is does anyone here (especially those in Kent) know of anyone capable of replacing bearings and rollers in my OHV gearbox, without charging the earth for a massive stripdown & super-professional warrantied service?
At this rate I'm tempted to give it a go myself however I would need some manual or guidance as to the best procedure and method of going about it.

Can't help with suggesting a professional but Vauxhall did produce training guides for the OHV transmission and getting one from ebay may be a good investment if you wish to explore DIY.

Thanks, yes that could be an option if one shows up.
