HB engine into HA

Postby Alank841 » Tue Oct 03, 2017 8:57 pm

Hi,, first post here
I've just purchased a HA viva with a knackered engine and have been offered 2 HB engines at a reasonable price.
I just need to know a bit of information as I know very little about these cars,,
What would the engine size be in my HA and is the HB engine a straight swap using the original HA gearbox and clutch Ect.
Thanks Alan.

should be no problem fitting the HB engine- there are 6 1/2" clutches fitted to HA an HB and early HC - use the HA gearbox which should match ok - easier to put engine and gearbox in as one as there is not a lot of clearance in the tunnel to fit gearbox separately.

Also your ha would have a1057cc engine and the hb engines were 1159cc.... they will both fit in the car with no problems. .

I am actually running a totally rebuilt HA engine with 30 thou overbore, in my HB. The head was a NOS item.
Some ancilories arent a straight swap, and the bore holes on head gaskets on HA engines arent completely round as they are on 1159s .
As Fred and Bedfordbad say, complete engines are a straightforward swap.
You will benefit from a bit of extra power and torque as long as the HBs arent warn, I have a complete rebuilt 1159 block if you need one.
Anyway the valve springs were the same on stock HBs as on 90 HAs, ie stronger springs, but if either or both engines you are offered is painted red then the chances are it/they is/are 90s in which case a stock Zenith carbs might be problomatic?!
I believe that some Bedford engines ran carbs with restrictors ( like a van we had on a Security firm that did nearly 50 MPG but hardly managed 60 MPH and that was with the later Viva/ Chevette 1256 engine).

You can also use later 1256 engines but you must use the flywheel and clutch från the earlier engines.
