Brake Calipers

Postby Andrew Morris » Sat May 05, 2018 8:19 pm

Am I missing a trick here?

Re furbed my Lockheed calipers, new pistons seals etc.Got the first bore seals in easily but cant get the metal sealing ring to sit evenly with the second seal at the pad end. Im using new old stock but there aint no way the rings will sit evenly at the caliper. Ive managed to bend one  luckily have more but now injuring fingers in the process?

No easy answer Andrew - just make sure the piston is pushed in fully - I have found that makes for an easier fit but they are a bit of a bugger to get right

You must use a suitable drift or something to support the ring in full. Otherwise it is very easy to damage them.
And it must be very very clean..........

I think that reading this has justified my preference for buying professionally re-furbished calipers. I tried DIY rebuilding a pair many years ago and gave up in the end. Since then I've always bit the bullet and bought exchange re-furbished and saved a lot of grief......

Thanks for the reply and I have to agree your absolutely right! 4x goes here proper machine clean and jet on the calipers and polish on the seal rings (Beautiful Job) full circumference drift on the ring ,slow applied hydraulic press (lovely) and hey presto every metal ring trashed!

Clearly not a job for even the most competent of DiY ers. So whilst I now concede defeat can any one help with a caliper refurb company that can just replace the top seal and metal rim as everything else is done.

Thanks in anticipation.

I have done many of these. I have managed to destroy 2-3 rings in total so if you have cleaned it properly and use proper tools something must be wrong..........
