Hi all,

Does anyone know the best place to get a new 80 - 84 degree (I think they are classed as 82) thermostat? I can find 88 degree ones locally but not 82 in 54mm. The faulty one I've taken out is 88 but I'm looking at putting the right one back in.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

QTH100, I believe. Also fitted to 69-76 Alfa Giulia 1.3 and 1.6, Aston Martin D4/5/6, Bristol 411, 412, 603, loads of American stuff, various Citroen and Dodge commercials, Fiats, Ford Anglias, Escorts, Mini, Mk2 and Mk10 Jaguar, XK120, 140 and 150, Land Rover 90 and 110, MGB (including the V8), Midget, Minor as mentioned above, Stag, Dolomite, it's almost easier to list stuff that doesn't use that type of thermostat.

The list seems to be :

QTH100 - 82 degree
QTH101 - 74 degree
QTH102 - 88 degree
QTH107 - 92 degree

which all seem to be compatible with each other, that is, I've seen listings for cars that have all of these in one combination or another, which suggests they are the same size.

True, although the QH listing I referred to above shows the 92 degree stat as an option. I missed where the OP referred to the lower version as "the right one".

I was thinking of going for a lower one on my hatch simply because it seems to run hotter than the Firenza. That might not be a bad thing - and might not be anything to do with the thermostat itself - but when you spend time queuing to get in and out of shows, a bit of margin might make me feel better.

The faulty one I took out is an 88 but there is 2 options according to the book but looks like 2 different housings so the 80 - 84 is for my housing. The 88 always ran a little hotter than I would like so I think the 82 will definitely help as it’s fully open at well under 100 degrees.

if an engine runs "hot" with an 88 degree thermostat something is definitely wrong. Mostl likely clogged radiator.

Only one thermostat is used according to the genuine parts book and that is a 88 degree.

Nothing wrong with the rad..... newly recored. Thermostat out it’s fine, thermostat in, it sticks half open. Problem solved!!!

The book say 80 - 84 for my engine and people in the know have agreed. Nothing wrong with going a little cooler on an old engine and will help prevent overheating when in queuing!!

Going back to the original question, a 82deg thermostat can be had from your local motor factor.
Just purchased one for my HB from Lomoco in Leamington Spa at a cost of 5.75p inc vat. Part number BGACT5529K.
Lists it as fitting a Rover Mini 1.0 but comes with an assortment of housing gaskets, indicating that it fits many more variants.
