1256 Head gasket

Postby Mike Attew » Sun Jun 24, 2018 8:45 am

When replacing the head gasket on a 1256 is it advisable to use Stag Wellseal jointing compound? My engine is down on compression on one cylinder so I am planning a rebuild later in the year.

Just done mine I used Hylomar only around the oil chambers as per the manual.

I was reading the Haynes manual and it says pre 75 [ mine is 72 ] to coat boath sides of gasket with Wellseal, after this to lay a bead along the pushrod rail on the block face and top of the gasket face.

All confusing and was wondering which is the best way to go.

Despite the Vauxhall training manuals telling you to use Hylomar I agree Wellseal is a better option, I think my head will need to back off again as it is seeping from number 4 cylinder.
I am told that Hylomar is designed for aluminium heads not cast ones.

Don't forget how much further advanced the sealant industry (and lubricant) is since these cars were made and the manuals written.
