Head gasket oil O ring

Hi guys,
I'm about to start putting the HC 1800OHC motor together and have noticed that there is no O ring for the oil way on the top of the block. Can I use a generic O ring or is it something special? Anyone know what size it is?

I don't think it's anything special. I measured one recently but don't have the details to hand, if no-one else replies in the meantime I'll try to remember to measure one again.

It will be imperial rather than metric.

Although given that the O ring is compressed "sideways" and not sealing around the perimeter it shouldn't matter.

Hi guys,
I measured up the hollow dowel and obtained a 5/16" O ring. However, this size O ring only has a cross section of 1/16" and quite frankly it doesn't look right. I've attached 3 photo's. The first shows the block deck with witness marks shown around the dowel and it looks like the original sealing ring was wider. 2nd pic shows O ring fitted and headgasket with large gap between the two and the 3rd pic shows the head shortly after it was removed from the engine and the head gasket removed. Note that this pic shows a washer type sealing ring. I did put the sealing washer some where safe but can't now find it
. The workshop engine manual calls it a "O" ring but I'm wondering if "O" ring and (copper) washer means the same thing?
Any further thoughts please? I don't really want to put it together to have it leak!!
Also how do I attach photos please, I've linked them is this the right thing to do?

not sure about the fit but am almost certain that O ring means (rubber) O ring

The oring must be thick enough to match the head gasket. They are available in many dimensions..........
The copper washer is meant to be on the manifold stud inside the thermostathousing.
I use standard orings and just check that the ring is just above the headgasket before assembly. This will compress it slightly and it will be fine. It is not rocket science.

You'll get all the O rings you need on Ebay:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from ... s&_sacat=0You'll be able to make seals/washers out of gasket paper which is oil resistant. If you need some gasket paper to make anything and can't get hold of any .. send me your address and I'll shove a couple of A4 sized sheets of it in the post.
