My new HB Estate cross-member has 2 bolts attached, I wonder what they're for, never seen them on any other cross-member, and secondly, could I remove them?

See picture, item is circled.

I have the same on mine and am fairly sure that they are for the metal pipe that is on North American cars -

I think <think> you can remove it.

I had a 1970 HC standard which I broke for parts back in the 80's. It had the 'Export' subframe with the towing eye welded to the bottom cross member. It was to tie down and secure cars in the transport ships. I assume the bar on North American cars was for the same purpose.

That "crashbar" is common in sweden also. perhaps on most export cars?

The bracket welded to the front of the axle for the extra crash protection bar, came from the Vauxhall parts bin. Recognise it? It is the rear spring to bottom arm cup with stud bracket. If you can grind off the welds without damage, the bracket can then still be used for its original purpose.
