This has probably been covered before so if it has I apologise.

Is there a difference between a 1256 Viva engine and a 1256 Chevette engine?

In particular with regards to the head and head bolts?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Exactly the same save for the engine mount which is the same bolt pattern as the viva mount just slightly longer. I dropped a rebuilt chevette engine into my viva, just swapped the mounts. Hope this helps!!

externally they will be the same, internally the main & big end bearings changed, also the rocker posts and tappet adjusting nuts changed size depending on engine number, you might even get the bonus of a Bosch distributor!

The bearing change was in '74 ish, long before the Chevette came along. The distributor was also fitted to late model Vivas.

Thanks guys, I bought a reconditioned Chevette short block a few years ago but want to put my original head on it as it is converted for unleaded.

I take it I can use the original Viva head bolts?

All 1256cc engines use 7/16th bolts, there are diff types of bolts but interchangeable...

shanked or non shanked.

captive washer or none

all in the anorak section if you didn't know :goodideasign:

One point.....the Chevette ring gears are "reversed" - because the Chevette have Pre - engaged starter motors. Bevels to the teeth are facing to other way. You have to use the "Viva" flywheel and its ring gear with a inertia starter motor or the teeth gets chewed up.
