1256 rear main seal

Postby daveyc123 » Thu Nov 01, 2018 7:34 am

Hey guys. I need to replace the rear crankshaft seal. I tried a few weeks ago but I'm still leaking oil. I think the seal tore when it went it.
In the Haynes manual it shows it being fitted with crank removed. Can it be fitted with the crank still in place? I don't feel very confident in removing the crank and getting everything back together. Or is it not as scary as I'm imagining it to be?
Any help, tips or tricks are much appreciated

Just about to do mine, hopefully removing the one bearing will give me access but any advice would be appreciated.

How did you manage to replace it the first time? I am qurious as you can not do it without removing the crank as the seal sits in a groove in the block and can not be removed as any other common seals.

You can replace it with the crank in place but the rear bearing cap has to be removed to do it.

Would that be by pushing the seal around the crank while it's sitting in the block? I could picture that would potentially damage it, but I'm not familiar with the OHV engine. Once you've got it to a point where you can remove the rear bearing cap, would it not be just as easy to remove the other bearing caps, and lift the crank so you can just slot the seal in place? I'm wondering how you would clean out any previous sealant without doing that.

There is only a small lip at the end of the block for the seal to slip into.

Ah, sorry, I was picturing it was similar to the OHC engine as a two-piece seal.

That's ok, a picture is a thousand words. :D . If something like Graphogen is used on the seal lip it will slip in nicely.
