does anybody know the differences between the 1800cc and 2300cc rear axle ? is there a better option for a 2300cc replacement and is it an easy swap ?

I believe the ratio is lower (or is it higher? I'm never sure) on the 1800 axle - that is, the engine revs higher for a given road speed.

Several people have switched to a 4HA axle from something like a Scimitar, I believe there's a company (is it Ian Jemison?) who has a jig to fit the correct mounting brackets and there's a lot of choice of diff ratios, LSDs and so on as the 4HA is used in a lot of different vehicles. I'm not sure what the prop flange is like, whether that needs changing as well.

Here are axle ratios for Vivas
Differential ratio. For Vauxhall Viva/Magnum axle the ratio is indicated by a letter stamped on the pinion housing - on the top for 1800&2300cc OHC engines, bottom for 1256cc:

A - 3.88, HA,HB
B - 4.125, HC
D - 3.45, 2300cc
K - 3.727, 1800cc

none on later 1256 cars - 4.125
