Water in cyl 1

Postby cooperman » Sat Apr 04, 2020 8:42 pm

Can anyone confirm please.

I removed the spark plugs and turned the engine over by hand before starting the car for the 1st time this year. Water spurted out of cylinder no.1. The water level was down in the rad.

I had the same thing last year and changed the head gasket but obviously that wasn't the cause.

It's an 1800 ohc, so I am assuming that water is getting past the bolt under the thermostat.

Is that right?

Any help appreciated,
Thanks
Marcus

That was my first thought Marcus. Try some Barr's leaks.

Does it run fine once it's going?

It seems lumpy on start up then settles down after a few minutes, which I assume is the water burning off. It's been like it for a while but the water in the cylinder is very noticeable after a long lay up. I first noticed it last year after a lay up as I tried to start it without removing the plugs, it turned over but seemed to hit a tight spot which I now think was hydraulic-ing. I removed the plugs and turned it over and a jet of water spurted out of the plug hole, plugs cleaned and back in and it turned over no problem and fired up.
I'll try your suggestion of Barrs before I get into stripping it.

I used Barr's leaks as an example, other sealers are available......

My preferred one years ago is a little simpler and contains vermiculite flakes. Here's the modern equivalent

There is a copper washer under the bolt head maybe a new washer would do the trick?

Maybe I'll change the washer!

Does anyone have a spare I could purchase?
