HC Speedo Cable Help please.

Postby Andrew Morris » Sat Oct 10, 2020 2:08 pm

I've had an annoying oil leak coming from the speedo cable connection at the gearbox as the brass knurled nut is not deep enough to support the small seal that sits inside the assembly.Having been through my old spares,I have fitted a new cable which has a much deeper thread ( not brass) and supports the seal assembly too. When getting to the instrument panel however the cable nut does not fit on the right angled adaptor,so I've had to revert back to the existing cable along with its oil leak.Is this a special cable I need for my late HC?
Thanks for any suggestions,
Andrew

Yes, the right angle adaptor has a different thread on each end. You may be able to remove the adaptor and go straight to your speedometer head with your new cable.

The thread on the head will suit your new cable.

Ah thanks for that,I have a spare instrument panel and after much head scratching I worked out that the new cable would go into the back directly as my spare does not have the adaptor albeit the identical Ripaults unit. This may sound daft but if I do go directly to the back is mileage still recorded ?
If yes was there a reason for fitting the adaptor piece in the first place?
Thanks

The mileage will still be recorded. I believe the angle drive makes the speedometer assembly easier to put together on the production line. It Is tight to get the cable directly onto the head but I understand it can be done.

Been having some difficulties removing the right angled connector from my speedo clock so I can fit a new cable.
Rather than attempt this any further is there a cable that will fit both the gear box thread and ripaults right angled connector for the later hc models.
Thanks

I'm not sure, but if there isn't you could take the appropriate measurements (length, thread on both ends) and either Speedograph or Speedy Cables will make you a custom one.

Once you've measured the diameter of the ends, stick them on here - I've got some speedo cables that don't fit my car.
