2300 ENGINE REVS

Postby griffonmark » Sun Oct 01, 2006 10:53 pm

At last I've got my Griffon 2300 running reliably and it has now had top speed testing. My mates satnav 'clocked' my car at 87mph which it reached in a couple of milliseconds, but that was more or less as fast as it would go. It showed 104mph on the clock. I've worked out from the gearing ( I have a low ratio 1256 4.125:1 rear axle giving 15.8mph per 1,000rpm) that the engine was at 5,500 revs at this point, some 500 revs past peak power. I don't have a rev counter so can anyone tell me just how fast these engines should run? My engine is standard with twin 175CD's and K&N filters. Regards, Mark

Differential ratio. For Vauxhall Viva/Magnum axle the ratio is indicated by a letter stamped on the pinion housing - on the top for 1800&2300cc OHC engines, bottom for 1256cc:

A - 3.88,
B - 4.125,
D - 3.45,
K - 3.727,

none on later 1256 cars - 4.125

2300 ENGINE REVS

5500rpm is about as far as they go on the stock cam.
With a high end "fast road" cam they'll do another 1000 easily (even with the Strombergs), but finding one of those off the shelf
isnt easy.
Stock cam can be reground to fast road spec (in fact that's all the cam makers usually do), though this reduces the base circle
which has been known to go beyond the stock tappet adjustment range in some cases.
