Tyre profile

Postby mazzo » Mon Sep 10, 2007 11:09 am

Was the old standard 155 x13 tyre an 80 profile?

Does the profile go to 70 when making the tyre wider - as in 165 or 175 tyres?

Need to change mine. Have standard rims. Hate the 175/70's - and they now need replacing.

Not sure whether to go 165/70 x13, 155/80x13 or even 155/70 or even 65 x13. I don't want anything flash (low profile) just a tyre that will handle OK, give a reasonable ride and not cause the speedo to read incorrectly.

To go on the 1600 HC. Suggestions please!

Hi Mazzo,
The tyre calculator on page 2 of this link: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html will tell you what effect your new tyres would have on the speedometer reading.

Hi mazzo,
The old 155 R13 tyres had an 82 profile, so apart from your 175/70s the other modern R13 tyres that will not noticeably affect your speedo readings are 165/75 and 155/80.
Regards,
Baz.

Thanks.

Eddie-101 - that is a REALLY useful web link. Thanks. It just shocked the hell out of me to work out how old my tyres are. Even though they are not used and the spare is unused, they are all going to be changed this week!!

Thank you. I think I am just going to revert to 155/80x13 as was original (well almost 82....)

Thanks again

Too old...... so old that they could have a driving licence, vote, drink in a pub and buy a packet of fags.

Deceptive isn't it? They look like new, even to the paint still showing on the treads (those thin coloured lines that you get). They don't seem to be dodgy and the MOT man thought they were fine, however they are going tomorrow - even though I still haven't found any Rostyles and will live on the steel rims.

So far £130 for a set of 5. Could do without having to spend the money, but I haven't a choice and I don't want to endanger myself or anyone else.

I admit mine are incredibly old too, but I think that to say as the website does that all tyres over six years old should never be used is too cautious. Just my thoughts of course. Come to think of it, I'd have got through about four sets on mine since the old ones went on!

Good link though. Very useful.

My oldest? 1981. Anyone beat that?

Right. I am going back to 155x13. Getting Arrowspeed ones tomorrow.

So if anyone wants 5 Goodyear 175/70x13 tyres which look like new but are 1986 vintage, then shout before tomorrow morning. They have no cracks on the sidewall (that I can see) and there is only one spot where the tyre has been in contact with the ground for a long time where their are some cracks on the actual tread at the side.

Failing that, I will get them to dispose of them.
