Recycling parts

Postby vivapete3 » Mon Aug 07, 2017 3:13 am

What is the clubs view on recycling used parts, I read recently about parts suppliers expressing concerns about diminishing classic car parts/spares and the need to return used parts for reconditioning, as parts for our cars seem to be increasingly scarce, does the club have a policy to recycle donated parts, to preserve stocks and as a source of revenue for the club possibly, anyone got a view on this issue? Cheers vivapete3.

Fred gets radiators and heater matricies reconditioned at a very, very good price for club members, which reminds me that I forgot to take the old 2300 automatic one I have to MH to donate to his cause......

It seems that starters, alternators and brake calipers are already well serviced by the reconditioning industry while recon steering racks seem to be in short supply. While radiators can be recored by your local reconditioner Fred's radiators are such good value that if I need one he's going to be the first port of call.

Thanx for your views, yes Fred's rads etc' are great value, I have a number of used brake shoes and wheel cylinders (some of the cylinders are rare) which I'll look to get reconditioned if practicable, cheers vivapete3.

We are looking to get parts reconditioned as they become more difficult to source. Currently I have had head gasket sets for OHV and OHC, and sump gasket sets for OHC remanufactured .
Tim Chick reconditions Alternators, Dynamos, and starter motors.
Looking into reconditioning steering racks.
Various sills and repair panels are available from Star Car Panels and Expressed Panels after collaboration from the VVOC .
So there are things going on behind the scenes Pete - if you look into refurbing the bits you have great.

The problem with the supply of some spares, specifically consumables like brake parts, clutches, etc. Is that there is a safety issue to consider. New old stock still in the box is preferable to something which has been say relined or cleaned second hand, as the workmanship and materials can't be guaranteed... At least by the club, and would thus put the club at risk of legal ramification IF they fail.

Our last parts man Dave was in the process of weeding out the crud that had been collected, and was clearly past it's day, so that parts the members buy would be fit for purpose. This may not be the most economic way to go, but it has to be said it's the safest.

Many of us in the club keep our eyes open for spares for sale on ebay, and privately for adding to club spares, so there is no shortage of eyes looking.

The liability issue is a thorny one, and leads to all sorts of potential difficulties which, in turn, starts to prevent people from doing things "just in case", which is often a big loss to the majority of people who wouldn't dream of causing them trouble. A local show changed quite significantly after a small group of people who were only very peripherally involved with it became concerned about their liability should there be an accident or, more to the point, a claim, after a series of incidents in the national press.

What would be the best solution for used brake pad shoes? I have a few used shoes so would I be able to send them somewhere for them to be re-padded or just bin them?

If they contain asbestos then they need to go to a specialist to be disposed of - expensive. You decide.....

I think with brake consumables such as shoes or pads, if there were a market for them I would probably sell them "as is" and share the details of the company who does the refurbishing. That way, the new owner contracts with that company, and that company will (a) hopefully know what they're doing, and (b) hold proper insurance to cover any unfortunate situations.
