Even without the retaining springs the shoes can't go anywhere, they are held between the drum and the back plate. I would suggest you wait to see if there are any other better answers before taking a chance on mine however.

Yeah that's what i thought... thanks for the links, I can see there are loads with the slot, I bought mine because they were the first full set i came across, they did state they were for the HB and I just clicked 'buy it now', I have messaged the seller in case they were sent in error, but as they have been fitted I'm not sure what he can do.
Girling modified these cylinders during production and so did vauxhall but I think they exist in several different types so it might not be vauxhall cylinders at all. Ford used the same setup and so did many others. Just appearance is not a good identification. Do you have any partnumber on the cylinders you bought?
The Viva HA "very early only" had a flat top to the pistons. From 1964 onward and right through to Viva HB they had slots in the top of the pistons, to prevent the slight sideways movement, that the early type had suffered from. That small movement causes juddering. If you have bought the early flat top piston type, then you've bought a lemon. Adrian
