You're having a larf....

Postby mazzo » Mon Mar 25, 2019 1:46 pm

Just got my renewal from FJ. Been with them about 14 years, same set of cars for the last 8. No changes to driving record or anything.

Renewal increase of 63% - yes, that's sixty three percent.

Why? Because they have now decided that, if you have more than 3 cars, then you can no longer have a classic car policy and have to move to a multi-vehicle policy. Thing is nothing has changed for 8 years, so why now?

Tried talking it through. Best they could give me was to look elsewhere.

Shame as I have always considered them the best. Plus they support the club.

Oh well..... anyone got any other suggestions for multiple cars?

Did they give you a quote for a multi car policy or was that what they were offering you for a 63% increase. I am with RH Specialist Vehicle Insurance - https://www.rhspecialistinsurance.co.uk/ I had 6 classic cars on a multi car insurance policy this last 12months for £340 - 3000 miles each limited mileage and they don't charge for making changes - in fact when I took the last 2 off I got a refund! - agreed value can be a certificate from the Club (Danny will agree a value with you and issue a certificate) - an independent evaluation - or the old six photos and a self assessment.
Hagerty are also useful if you don't want the administration charges but are more expensive than RH.
The only thing F J seem to be good at is paying the Club royalties on members insuring with them in exchange for an advert in the mag. - if we get a wholesale disillusionment with the quotes/renewals being offer then the royalties will soon go down the pan - Dan, is it worth having a word with your F J contact?

I'm with Heritage Insurance (formerly Norton Insurance) and they changed me this year onto a multi-car policy. They did ask if I wanted to add my modern, but I like to keep that separate, and keep the renewals at separate times. Mine sometimes goes up, as it does on the modern, then I phone them up and ask them to do a bit better, often with good results. It's never gone up by that amount, though.

Interesting and thanks for the replies. Actually they said the same: you can add your modern cars to this, so long as they don't outnumber the classics.

So I said - so is this a classic policy then? No, it's multicar. Like you, I don't want to mix things.

The price is still OK - less than yours (albeit less cars) but it is unlimited mileage and all the breakdown cover etc.

Just a shock to go up that much for a reason that seems a bit tenuous. I was told "we've had a max of 3 cars on the classic policies for years". When I said that I've had more than 3 for 8 years, the response was "well it's probably catching up on you!" Great....

It runs out on Wednesday so I'll have to do something quick. As I am very short of time these days, the likelihood is that I will end up having to go with it.

The most intriguing thing I was told was about parking the car. I said that mine are on the drive - which sometimes they are but mostly are in the garage. Two of the cars had been listed as parked on the road (incorrectly) so I thought this was the reason for the hike. Apparently not. I had been told 2 years ago by FJ that if you list your car as being in the garage and it is stolen off your drive, it isn't covered, so always insure it for the drive, not in the garage. What I was told today is that drive and public road are classed as the same. I find that hard to believe and certainly isn't the case with my normal car insurance.

I've had similar. Mine are stored in a garage / shed / barn, but when I bring one home to go out early the next day to a show, I have to leave it on the drive. I've explained this every year, and each time they say it's a problem, go back to the insurers, the insurers add a clause and say it's OK, then next year I have to do the same as they've "forgotten". Ironically if I just leave it in a public car park overnight, that's fine. So each time I point out how ridiculous it is that a public car park is considered safer than the drive at home where there are people who will hear stuff going on. On my first classic policy, it wasn't covered at all overnight at home - it had to be at least a mile away. I didn't stick with them for long.
