I just drilled out the old tubes and refitted the rubbers on the new springs with a length of suitably sized copper pipe, i spread the pipe at the ends by using old sockets that fitted inside the tube on each end and then tapping with a hammer. The radius on the sockets spread the pipe enough to retain it. I annealed the tube first to soften it.

The tube is only there to stop you tightening the rubber so much that you ruin it's sound insulation qualities and nothing else. So copper is fine.

Thanks for your reply.have tryed to drill them out but they turn in the holes. Copper pipe is a good idea never thought of that. Ps it's not the 1.6 i am working on.

I have been trying to remember how I did it, I think I used a flat blade screwdriver and tapped around it with a hammer and then changed to a pin punch until I got them apart. I just kept working around it a bit at a time.
