Probably just a sticking clutch

I have a rather cruel way but it seems to work - get it warm and press the clutch in and go for reverse

Think Fred's right there. Sticking clutch plate by the sounds of things.
Foot on the clutch pedal, start her up and get it warm, put it in to gear, first or reverse , rev it and let the clutch go suddenly. Usually cracks the disc away from the clutch face.
Warning though!! make sure there is no one in front or behind, whichever way you do it!!
One other problem with this brutal method is it can snap half shafts in the rear axle if seriously stuck!!!

Good luck with it.

No luck releasing the clutch so will take it to the garage to have it looked at. Is it worth replacing the clutch release bearing at the same time ?

If you have the engine and gearbox split - absolutely change it! (assuming the new ones are of decent quality)
