big engine car insurance ????

Postby grandas_shed » Tue Jan 12, 2010 10:56 pm

i was just wondering.
if you put a different engine (not a standard one ) into a car. (say put a 2L pinto into a viva) how do it affect the insurance. do it cost much more to insure? and is it still clasified as a classic.

anything else that it could affect, like tax class if the car was tax excempt before the engine change

With a specialist company it is fairly inexspensive, I pay £225 fully comp with all the mods declared value at £10,000
My mods include (If you aint seen the car) 5.7ltr v8 jag axle big fat wheels body kit etc

Any mod should be declared to insurance company , allthough it may not alter the premium.
Lots of classic cars have some kind of modification , possibly modern engine/ gearboxes / brakes etc , IMO they are still classics although many may say they are not a pure classic (kept as original)
I havent heard of anything that effects the tax exempt status - other than reregistering to a newer plate such as "q" plate if no v5 is available or reshelling etc.
Thats probably why there are so many big engine conversions done to tax exempt cars .
Your Cresta at 3.3 ltr would be quite costly to tax if it wasnt exempt

Agree with what the lads are saying tbh ..

Insuring an older car with modifications isn't like insuring something newer . In a lot of cases the difference in insuring an old car , then insuring the same car but modified is negligible.

To give you an idea ..

My Viva has got a 2.0 inj , 5spd , -60mm gas suspension , polybushed , alloys , cage , harnesses blah blah - £180 fully comp on a 3000 mile a year policy ( and agreed value too)

I've also got a '77 kadett hatch - bog standard engine/box but -75mm suspension , polybushed , cage - £120 fully comp , 3000 miles a year policy ( and also agreed value ).

I appreciate they're different cars but one's a 1.2 and it's £120 to insure , the other's a 2.0 and it's £180 .. nowt between them really .

Plus on the Viva it's a policy that I can accrue no claims bonus with unlike some of the cheaper 'classic' policies ..

When I was ringing around for quotes a few years back the only real stumbling block I had was because of the cage . There are loads of companies who will quote you happy regarding suspension changes , engine swaps etc but as soon as you mention 'rollcage' that seems to narrow it down to a handful.

I've been with HIC for years now and found them to be okay . Pretty sure Adrian Flux are part of the same company too.

Oh and yeah , declare everything . My insurance company know that I've got a front splitter , bullet mirrors , central locking , a different gearknob , a K+N filter - don't miss anything out , it ain't worth it !

My HC (1256) with a 2.0ltr fitted is £350 a year fully comp with 12,000miles.

With the standard engine it was costing me £150 fully comp.

This year money was tight so I went third party fire and theft and it was £250.

I didn't realise tax exempt cars stayed tax exempt after an engine conversion! The only thing I didn't think about when I did the conversion was the big jump in tax class.

I'm with Adrian Flux.
