Ha brakes

Postby Alexander » Mon Jun 20, 2011 9:54 pm

Hi! Since my HA has gotten a Volvo engine with about 130hp I cant try to not think of that the brakes will be needing a upgrade. At the rear it will get another rearaxle so there is no problem there. The problem is in the front, A guy has told me that a hub from volvo 140 will fit. But that sounds to good to be true in my eyes.. Anyone thats heard of this and knows if its alot of modifications needed in that case?
I have also seen that Pop Browns sells conversion kits, then you use calipers from ford escort and discs from ford capri. But i dont know if i can pass the MOT here in sweden with that. Is there anyone that uses this kit and can tell how the car feels etc? :)
Another thing is that i have discs and calipers that whould fit on volvo hubs, so then i whould not have to spend money on that. And the MOT whould love if i had those brakes..
So any input or advices or anything? :) discussions would be nice to.. I think i read that Tony was going to upgrade the brakes on the v6 ha, have you started looking at that yet? :)

No, just that no one has considered using Volvo parts to upgrade a HA before... Sounds like you could have a monster on your hands when you complete it.

Just out of interest, what's the engine from?

Sometimes, I wonder why I bother, and then for one fleeting moment things will go right for a change.

A monster is what im going for!
The engine is a volvo b23e out of a Volvo 240 glt -84. There is a similar engine in the volvo 740 a couple of years later thats called b230e, but it has less hp and the distributer(?) on the backside of the head, mine has it in the block. No room for it in the head here.. :)

Hi Alex

Nope..... not had a chance to much mechanical development on the V6, in fact its in rather a sorry state purely due to neglect...... simply not enough hours in my days with work, family and 4 other cars to run/play with/break.... :D

One thing in favour of the HA is the 3 1/4" caliper spacing which matches the larger Girling calipers like the P14 from the HB/HC Vivas, and the P16 from the droop. If you change the threads to metric this also meand that the M16 caliper from Ford Cortinas, Capris, escort will also fit, so from that line you can also get all sorts of after market alloy M16 sized calipers, four pot etc etc. Thats the principle I'm looking at.....

Keep up the hard work!

I can understand that the hours isnt enough. I can fell the same sometimes.. :)

What discs should be used if going for m16sized? Or is it for going with the stock ones? I whould need some bigger discs to since i will change the rearaxle and going with bigger brakes there to! So im looking at using volvo 240 calipers, since "spacers" anyway whould be needed to get the caliper more away from the center for bigger discs? And then going for discs around 250-260mm.

Alot to think of.. 8)
Well, im off to the car!

If you can get the Volvo brakes to fit, then definitely go with them. I had the b23e in my '87 740 estate, and the thing flew (quite literally sometimes 8) ) Are you going to fit the 240 rear axle, or 740 which already comes with disc brakes?

Yes, i will have a look at if they can be made to fit. If the viva has 3 1/4" as Tony said then the difference between stock and the volvo calipers is about 4-5mm.. But i could guess that i anyway need to get the caliper out from the center and might sidewise to with some sort of spacer, and then that doesnt mather to much..
Now i just need to find some discs for 4x100 or similar in the right size! wish me luck ;)
I can tell you that the car is a monster, yes.. Great feeling when the foot is down! ;)

Yes, they do run pretty well! And since its an old volvo it pretty much lasts for everything and if something breakes its cheap.. :D
Yes, rear axle will be 240. That i will start with that to the winter, or when this one dies. :)

Hi

Just a thought - if you are looking for disc brakes to go on the outside of the hub, then the studs are 4 x 101.6, not 100mm. Oversize holes may be a way to make these fit, but I would advise a central spacer to ensure the disc (and wheel) remains central on the hub else you could get all sorts of vibrations and may even shear off a stud..... :?

Yes, that its 101.6 and not 100 i know, but as you say i was planing to have a spacer in the center ( or if i can find a disc with the right already..) Then that shouldnt be a problem, right? :) I hope so atleast..
Yes, vibrations in the brakes is not something i want!
When i was at a race a couple of weeks ago one driver snapped all of his studs on a frontwheel during braking. I dont know if thats why, but didnt look fun!
