I think Quaife will do LSDs for the HD Vauxhall axle, at a premium, last time I looked into a aftermarket LSD I changed my mind about going that route, In the end went Toyota Celica Liftback ST lsd axle, Tough as old boots, I did upgrade to Moser shafts so I could narrow the axle, and the factory shafts were bigger than 9" ford shafts...

Ooh, that's an interesting titbit! Thanks for that, I do a little bit of auto-soloing and autotesting from time to time so one day I might end up wanting one (plus going sideways is just enourmous fun!). I'm told the Victor diff will fit the axle with? Goodness me, the Toyota axle has halfshafts bigger than a 9" ford?!? Thats crazy!

Gotta admit when my Magnum axle arrived, and I lifted it off the pallet I had a moment of deep worry that it was in fact a normal bog-standard 1256 axle, (I've not examined the standard Viva axle in any detail thus far)-it seemed so light and twig-like compared to ford english and atlas I've dealt with before, I had to measure the brake drums to put my mind at rest I'd got the right one lol! They are 9" drums instead of 8", so thankfully it's the proper jobber!!

And the Jenson Healey the axle came out of had a 2litre Lotus 907 engine (anecdotally based on Vauxhall slant-four), and Magnum suspension/drivetrain so unless someone was playing silly buggers I shouldnt have gone far wrong. With the diseaseal engine I want a higher gear ratio so it should work a treat! Evidently mine is a 3.73:1, but option to go to 3.455:1 if I need to swap.

The axle survived Hundreds of launches at Santapod, 1.5sec60fts and vey low 12 sec 1/4s thats on a manual box too, and as a little snippet too, the axle looks like a english too, + it used Mustang halfshaft bearings as well,

Niiiiice! 1.5sec 60ft? That's seriously impressive, I do some rwb-ing on a 750cc motorbike and the best I've achieved is about 1.8sec 6ft. And 12's from your Viva?!> I'm rather jealous. 11.85 @ 110mph is the fastest my bike will do, but by the sounds of it your Viva would beat it to the 8th no problems! Congratulations, seems like you've built a devastating tool there! :respekt:

It was doing maybe 20-25 odd mpg,
it now does 45mpg,with pretty much the same performance.

What a brilliant conversion, used to own a escort 1.8 TDi endurance jobbie lovely strong simple engine.... I wonder if it would fit a Viva seeing as the sump would be the same design? maybe just a rad issue as its a long block?

Unfortunately that was my last toy, it was a shhhhh, Ford Cortina!!!!!, the Viva will never be as quick as that, well not straight away :goodideasign: , to run those numbers you have to be in the 300hp, 250 ft/lbs area with a 1000k car,

Bonnet was off the Mk2 looking for a noise/misfire, 2 runs later I sheared the timing gear in half!!!

Thanks Mr P,the engine fitted in without too many mods,
the sump just cleared the X member,I just had to knock back the bulkhead on the drivers side to clear the turbo and down pipe.
It would be interesting to see if one would fit in a Viva,
might be a bit tight, you would have to use a slant 4 x member, but the diesel lump didn't appear any longer than the slant 4 it replaced.
I reckon it might be do-able
There is a few pics of the conversion here

Just one more turn should do it....
