A few ones have done it, some mount it above the axle in front of the tank while others have mounted it close to the original position in the engine bay.

Selection of the correct pump is important. Facet make a very suitable 'solid state' pump with a plastic body to replace a mechanical pump for about £30 or so, these run at 3-4 psi and can supply enough fuel for up to about 150bhp. Ensure you buy the kit complete with a filter. There are cheaper metal ones of unknown origin which I would avoid.

You will need an ignition controlled positive feed, and for safety, you should seriously consider wiring in an inertia cut off switch which cuts the power to the pump in the event of an accident. These are available second hand from breakers or ebay for about £15. Minis, Fiestas and MG Rovers are just a few of the cars fitted with them. You should ensure that you get the wiring plug that connects to the switch with it. Something like this one.

Good luck!

General consensus seems to be that a pusher pump is better than a puller' ie closer to the tank

Trouble there was that when the outlet pipe split on my old Scimitar SS1 it was behind the *Bleep* tub and a real sod to get at, and the pump itself was accesssable as to all the carp it kept pumping up from when the tank had emptied itself and a chain reaction with poor electrics etc the poor thing commited Hari Kari and set fire to itself.

I have both new alternator and CVH pump twas an XR3 obviously change to go fore and aft)that remain unused as too a couple of auxillory driving lights that could be mounted on the Vivas bumpers, however I am not about to drill holes in those.

OK a lot of old BMC cars had the pumps in the boot, and often on Mins and 1100/1300s carrying a rubber mallet would revive that tell tale clicking, when whatever the vehicle,ot wouldnt initially start.

however on my HB it is below the nearside bulkhead adjoining the inner wing, however with the deceased Small Sports 1 “ experience”:that is a great tip regarding the cut off switch, albeit on one of Tamworths finest the fire apeared to be sparked off in the Webber 28/36 .
once I sorted the electronic ignition and dodgy carbs on my Vivas rebuilt engine and a few other teathing problems it actually started in what we deam wintry conditions when my Diesel Van wouldn't, but with a bit more fettling it has to be said.

Still from day one of ownership it is used all year around and went down a treat last Sunday when going to a family do for one of my Great Nieces 21st and many friends God Parents and such present.

Hi all, thought I'd add my thoughts to electric fuel pump installation. In my case my car is running on a Megajolt ecu and one of the programmable outputs is set to switch the pump on via a relay when the engine revs are higher than 900rpm and off again if the engine drops below 900rpm so if the engine stalls for any reason the pump cuts out. I also have an inertia switch in series with the coil feed so in the event of an accident, the engine stops immediately. This interlocks with the ecu to shut off ignition and fuel in an accident. I wired it this way as I was surprised at just how long the car can run on the contents of the float bowls alone. I've got a maintenance override switch to prime the carbs should they ever run dry. My pump is mounted in the engine bay with an inline non return valve and the fuel pressure set to 2.5psi on the filter king.
Regards, Dave.

Does that mean that your engine has to crank over at more than 900rpm in order get fuel to start Dave, or is there an override during start?

That's the way I read that too, also my engine ticks over quite happily at a 750 rpm....hmmm. I'll be adding a fuel pump control to my ECU to activate the high pressure injection pump, I must look at the parameters and see what's what...

Hi, I've found during testing that there is more than enough fuel in the float bowls to start the car then let the pump come in at 900rpm. It takes a bit of the strain off the float valves when cranking and enables me to have the ignition turned on without the pump running. Tickover on my car is set at 1000rpm.

On an injected engine you won't have one of my concerns , that of an inertia switch cutting the pump but the residual fuel in the carbs allowing the engine to continue running for some time. That's the reason I put the inertia switch into the coil feed and the pump control into the ecu. Once your high pressure pump is cut off, the motor will stop almost instantly.
