What type of mods could you do to a 1256 to make it faster?

The answer is all sorts, but before I go into a monolog, how much faster, and how much do you have to spend ???

Aha....

Well, in its day there was not much you could not get - trouble is none of it is routinely made anymore (maybe an airfilter......)
2nd hand parts do come up, and mechanical mods can all be dealt with either at home if you are so equiped, or by the specialists for money.
E-bay occasionally turns up the odd gem for reasonable money, and the for sale adds online and in the club mag can also be a source of parts.

You can (could) get - carbs, inlet manifolds, cams, followers, head mods of all stages, overbores, stroked crankshafts, exhaust manifolds, modified distributors, oil coolers, clutches, lightened flywheels and even supercharger kits. The viva HB and HC models also could have modified suspension, shocks, brakes and even LSD's, although I'm not sure anybody fitted one to an OHV model.

So, does that help ?? As I said, the problem is finding any of it these days.

Cheers

back in the day a certain mr bill blystein used to stroke 1256s to 1600cc dont know how much this would cost but would be a very retro mod.
Vivas seem to be highly addictive,

I'm pretty sure they were 1500cc motors. I once rang Bill Blydenstein and asked him about them but he was much more interested in telling me that you really want to replace the standard engine with an 1800cc one and that our cars really need a 5th gear... anyways he said that he only ever produced 8 kits, comprising a custom crank and shortened rods... and possibly different pistons - that's what I've written in my notes on the conversation anyway. He said they also tried turboing a 1500 motor in a Chevanne and that it was 'a dog' although he can't remember what compression the engine ran.

Tony and I were discussing this in another thread the other week and he seemed to think that some offset-overbore motors were made - without having to use a custom crank(!) which is obviously the expensive bit.

For a stroker motor if it were possible to get a custom crank made up and shorter rods then how much for a one-off kit? £10,000? I really don't know. As for the offset-overbore motor using larger pistons (saab 99 ones were mentioned) this would obviously be cheaper and an interesting piece of engineering to undertake but I'm not sure how long I'd expect the thing to last!

Of course money and sense are rarly married.

If money isnt the object then spend £10,000 on an engine that might give you 150 bhp and last 1000 miles, drive like a pig, drink fuel and generally be usless in town, or £2,000 on a red top turbo engine and bits and have 220bhp usable everyday, with good MPG.

Like all mods its about what you want at the end of the day, the best OHV based engine money no expense or a fast fast car not too worried about what engine is under the bonnet.

personally I like the idea of a 4x4 red top turbo 6speed gearbox set up in a HC, but like I said "money and sense"
