1600 HC

This car was another that I saved and I wanted it as soon as I heard about it because it is a 1600 and a little bit unusual. For some reason (and I don't know why) I'd always wanted a 1600 - perhaps because it was the only variat I've never owned. It had sat under a tarp for about 15 years but the tarp had torn and water and leaves got underneath. It was quite rust, some severe and the paint had been sanded off the roof and other surfaces due to the tarp blowing around. The bonnet was so bad it was not savable.

The first Rust Festival recommissioned the car (big thanks still to all those who helped) and since then, I've slowly been getting on with it. It is fantastic inside but poor on the outside.

Red bonnet, red oxide everywhere.

Today I got it back from the spray shop. He did a lot of prep work too, including saving the wings (welded in metal not filled) same with one of the doors. I am really pleased with it. It is brilliant for the price and although I have to flat it down and polish it myself (because he said the paint should wait for about two weeks before I do it), it still should look all right for Billing.

No trim back on other than front bumper and grill.

Not bad at all. Have you slept at all the last few weeks, your turning out Vivas faster than they made them!!

Now onto the wheels. I have a choice here - I can put the standard wheels off the green HC onto the 1600 (along with the trim and hubcaps) which is my preference. Then put Rostyles on the green HC. I think for Billing purposes I'll put the Rostyles on the 1600.

What do folks think?

Anyway, here's this afternoon's work.

Naff, rusty all black Rostyles

Then wire brushed by hand and drill

And finally sprayed and lacquered. Nowhere near perfect at all, but a bit better than they were.

Don't worry about the overspray - these tyres are going. Want 155x13s and these are 175s. If anyone wants them (Firestones) let me know and I'll bring to Billing (on the understanding they are old and I have no idea of their history. Tread looks good mind.

Put whatever the car came with on. Steels and trim on the 1600 I think.

Yes Peter, I will have steels on the 1600 in the end. I think at Billing the green HC will have the steels because it did come with them (being a base model) and it will save me a bit of time of doing wheel swapping.

I made a mistake on the tyres, they are 185/70x13. Two are Firestones and 2 are Jupiters. Firestones about 4mm tread and the Jupiters about 7 or 8mm. If nobody wants them, I'll just let the tyre people keep them when they change the tyres on Tuesday.

Jupiters

Firestones (both are the same)
