No joy......

Car is decidedly odd. It is almost like the mechanical timing is out. Tony can explain about the crank etc, but I can say for sure that the top half is set up correctly. That is the oil pump pulley and cam pulley line up at (what we think is) TDC. Distributor is in correctly and points and ignition timing set OK.

Weird thing is this. When setting static ignition timing, either at 9' or 18' BTDC it hardly runs at all. You have to move the distributor fully anticlockwise as far as it will go. Then it kind of runs. I took the dissy out and put it back in so that it was a few degrees retarded. Then if it is turned fully clockwise, it runs probably the best it can. But whatever is going on, it is not normal and I too am struggling to come up with a solution other than mechanical timing.

It is the earlier OHC with the two point metal bracket type ignition timing markers.

may be possible the fault is elsewhere, air leak or blocked jet in the carb perhaps ?

Air leak ??.....thats why I now need another servo !!. The pipe is now temporarily blanked off
Last night Maz conducted a small experiment and found that by swapping plug leads 3&4 on his HC it exhibited the same symptoms !!.....problem is mine does it with the leads on the RIGHT plugs ????????????????????.

Siezed bob weights or failed vacuum sensor?

So swap the leads about on yours :D

Seriously, just because parts are new does not mean they work, check the bob weights move, check the vacc advance operates (suck pipe), swap the pulgs and leads about, check the rotor arm pickup is not loose.
The engine can be set to TDC by aligning the woodruff key on the crank with the line stamped into the front of the block. Then check the timing pully alignment again.
Check the follower clearance cold to ensure they are not miles out, check the compression again, hot if you can.
Check for air leaks on the inlet (WD40 while running, not into carb intakes as damages rubbers).

Keep looking, you will find it :goodluck:

Found a timming problem on the GT I had. The aux pulley that drives the oil pump/dizzy has timming dots on both sides(at least mine did). They were slightly out with each other. Turned the pully round and timmed it again, ran like a dream.
