Right, removed the glass, then the tailgate, then welded up the inner frame, spot welded rather than seam weld, in case it distortes too much, & replaced the tailgate & checked the gaps, OK so far apart from a small amount of distortion on the outer skin, bit more filler will sort that out though so happy so far :-)

A bit outside my comfort zone if I'm honest, never tried to patch panels like this, closest I've come is to replace wheelarches & sills, quite pleased with the results, just have to do the final finish with filler, shouldn't be too difficult  ! ! !

Finished !! well, for the time being anyway, brush painted some peacock blue paint left over from last resto to protect it for now, hard to tell from pics but Its turned out real well, I also refitted the rear screen using a saloon rubber, not ideal as its a very tight fit over the screen & it shows at the corners where it pulls in,[attachment=1084 (640x360).jpg[/attachment]

Had a good look at the rear valance, it was covered in underseal & looked to have been repaired before, cleaned off the underseal & filler to reveal a brazed on patch, this was removed & I was left with this
the bottom of the valance has gone almost the entire length, had a look at a sill panel I had left over from a capri, removed the flanges, & held it up the valance to check the profile
a perfect fit ! how lucky is that, it will still need some work as the valance curves the other way between the rear wings but im confident a good repair can be done

Bit of of an update, cut the valance back to good metal, done the same with the inner valance
patched up the inner valance using some of the remainder of the bootlid used to repair the tailgate,no point wasting good 1960's steel when you can replace one part of viva with another ( capri sill excepted  ) & finally, repair section tacked in place

Good work so far. Keep the updates coming along please.. its really nice to see someone else restoring an HB wagon - stops me feeling alone in this rare HB wag world :D

So I presume the tailgate glass is not too much bigger than a saloon rear window?

The tailgate glass is about the same horizontally, but about 50 mm longer vertically, so although the saloon rubber can be persuaded to fit, it doesn't fit nicely in the moulded corners where they are losing their shape, I'll probably try to refit the screen using a rubber off the roll

Yep I can see my tailgate screen rubber disintegrating when I go to remove it. I have two tail gates and one is better than the other plus its the same body colour. But its the one without the glass...... :(
