Badged as a HB Deluxe with a SL grille and SL90 carb and air filter set up or perhaps the entire Deluxe/SL90 engine has been transplanted.

Nice looking car!

The carb and air box set up appears to be from a late 70s 1256 HC or Chevette. Could the engine and carb set up have been transplanted from a later 1256 car?

I could be wrong but didn't 1256 engines have '1256' cast in the side? (...or did I dream that?)

Good luck with the MOT for a great looking HB! :D

I assumed it was a 1256 but can't see 1256 on the block anywhere, but thats what my chevette had just behind the fuel pump area. Where is the engine number normally on these, is it the number stamped just above the alternator?

I heard the red rocker cover was on the SL90 engine but dont they normally have the flat filler cap?

Hi
If has the pot filter around the dip stick it will be 1159cc as all 1256s dont have early 1256cc didnt have 1256 on but those after sept 1973 had 1256 cast onto the block by the dipstick hope this makes things a bit clearer.

Regards Chris.

Thanks for clearing that up Chris, you can never really tell what you're getting when a car gets to this age!

UPDATE: We have an MOT!! It failed a week ago Monday as there was a bad earth on one brake light and it needed a patch in the boot. However, they had to jump it after the test as the starter didn't want to know! Ended up getting a 2nd hand chevette one for £20 and it's been fine since.

My mate popped round yesterday and did the welding for me and now once the MOT goes through online i'll be taxing it :woohoo: :party2:

Took it out yesterday and today for a spin and all was well until the drive home today. Temp gauge was about 3/4 up and then alot of steam appeared! Coolant came out of the overflow pipe and onto the engine bay, so either a blocked rad or the water pump is no good.

All fun!

There are other possibilities like - weak radiator cap or - to be a joab - head gasket gone causing pressurising in the water system
If the the temp gauge was only 3/4 full scale and not in the red then the above is more likely?

Borrowing a compression tester and gonna see what that shows. Took it for a quick spin today and parked it up with the gauge at halfway and coolant was coming out of the overflow pipe.

Fred, someone on facebook said you may have rads available for an 1159?

Thanks fred, you're a bit far though and i remembered there is a local guy that still does rad repairs.

Ok, so just checked the compression and we averaged between 25-50 psi on all cylinders, obviously not very good news!
