Hinge pins

Postby Ian Lawrence » Tue Dec 13, 2016 9:48 am

So I have to be honest . I have removed and replaced hinge pins on many cars (including old Fords!) . I do not want to belt away too hard here but I am getting a little frustrated with my HA van pins. First application of duck oil 5 days ago....Tapping away generally......Another soaking (again overnight) Tapping slightly more robustly.....Yesterday small gas heat gun......Sweating lightly.....Tapping firmly....Are you getting the story here? More freeing oil overnight.

Today! I am armed with a 2lb club hammer and the usual culprits.

Can I just check ? There are no hidden circlips or pins on these to retain the pins are there?

Thanks all.

Where are you hitting? You need to hit under the top rim, not on the bottom as that can just cause the pin to expand and make it even more difficult to remove.

Search down the forum, there's a thread where someone described in detail how they made a hinge pin removal tool. It might have been for HC, but the principle is probably very similar.

Yes I got that very same info from Facebook. In so much they were saying that if you hit the end it would obviously result in have an almost opposite effect. I will take a look at the removal tool thread. Many thanks.

I suspect the damage has already been done... the pin is made of very soft metal on purpose so IT wears down not the door...... I suspect lots of heat and a purpose made drift might get it... (think I tried a 4" nail)

Putting a jack under the other end of door to take the weight might help..
If all else fails grind off the hinge on the body side and weld it back on when you've managed to get the pin out...
I had to do that on my pick up and it worked well..
Good luck...

Read to the end, if I recall correctly the first one didn't work as well as expected.

I removed my hinge pins when I took the wings off, cut a slot in some steel bar so it would go over the head & hit it with a hammer, had to re cut the slot a couple of times for 2 stubborn hinges but job done :D
