I agree, the only way is to work with it out of the car. Lots of heat, twisting, hammering and it may eventually move. When I did a set back many years ago I got to the same place as you before realising that taking the subframe out to gain access was the only way forward.

As everyone has said it is a subframe out job, plenty of WD40 or it's equivalent and plenty of patience and heat. And that might not even do the trick. In extreme cases, when nothing would shift it, we cut it off flush with the crossmember on both sides, then using a drill that is the same diameter of the tube, drill inwards enough to cut through the bit that is welded to the crossmember on both sides, the replace the entire tube with a new section cut to length.

I've tried, with my rudimentary grasp of photo editing, to show you what i mean here using your own pictures:

if WD40 isn't getting you anywhere you could also try putting milkstone remover around as much of the affected area as possible with a paintbrush (Use Plenty!!!) Come back in a few hours and it will have ate all the rust off it !!
You should be able to get it in any local hardware or farm supplies store.

Then, as recommended, apply a lot of heat.

Took her for a drive and after 5 minutes of enjoying the thought, of it taking 3 and a half years of getting her back on the road.. she broke down  turns out the fuel tank was completely rusty which blocked the fuel pipe! so i'll try one of my other tanks.

Can someone remind me the size of the OHV tank and the OHC tank please? as i've never had an OHC tank with either of my GT's

I know there was an 8 gallon tank and a 12 gallon tank. Not sure if they were split 8 for OHV 12 for OHC.

I know my OHV has an 8 gal anyway.

I believe that is the case on HC, I'm not sure about HB.

don't want to hijack the thread but have been meaning to ask - do the tanks install from the top or the bottom? IE is there a different sized hole in the boot for the 8 gallon tank as opposed to the 12 gallon?

The 8 gallon has a flat top and fits directly into the boot aperture and makes up part of the boot floor, and is fitted from inside the boot. The 12 gallon fits under the boot floor, has a rounded top, is fitted from underneath the car, and there is a separate panel that bolts into the boot floor to mimic where the 8 gallon tank would fit.

Finding a serviceable 12 gallon tank with all the fittings needed to fit it and working sender is like finding zebra stripes.... Zebra stripes are only found on a zebra and serviceable 12 gallon tanks are now generally only found on running cars.
