tonights question - door handles

well, very very good news and two questions.

Am slowly moving to reassemble the car and tonight I dug out the door handles and ignitions - I have I think 7 handles and three or four ignitions and three sets of keys. The good news is that I found the combination of ignition/door locks and trunk that actually work with one key - huzzah! I truly did not expect that.

That said, two questions.

1. How do you dismantle the locks to clean and to get the handle re-chromed?

2. Any leads on new handles so I don't have to re-chrome? (ie is there a more cost effective option)

thanks all!

If they're anything like HC handles, there's three (I think) small screws that hold the back together, and once you've undone those it's easy to remove the plunger from the handle. If you then remove the plate from the back of the lock (the plate that the rod fits into, again I think a small screw), insert the key and the lock should come out of the plunger.

Take loads of photos and have them to hand when it goes back together. I managed to put one of mine back so that the plate was the wrong way around, and wondered why the rod to the door lock wouldn't reach. I wouldn't mind so much but I have several to refer to.

Thanks for the reply! Turns out that HB(GT) is not the same as HC - looked and looked and looked and finally realized there is a small c-clip (like a circlip but without the holes) holding everything in. removed that and all popped out.

Now to clean and lube and sort out what the best arrangement is.

cheers all!
