Egg the HC

Postby Kraken » Tue Nov 20, 2018 3:37 pm

I can't see work starting for a good while on this but I thought I may as well start a thread just now as I can compile things in here so I don't need to remember them.

I bought Egg for £100 and had him shipped up from Stoke for £175 (bargain).
He is a 1972, 2-door Deluxe, originally in Monaco White.
Egg has no keys or v5.

I have managed to unlock the boot with the key for my Saab 99. Inside I found a few spares, and the missing driver's seat!
I can lock/unlock the doors with the key from Beigey.
So far no luck with the ignition. I found a piece of paper behind the cowling that I hoped would have the key code on it... It just said "4."...

Egg's paint is shot.
Rear arches will need work.
Inner and outer wills will need work.
Inner wings will need work too.

Build option codes are:
274 - Front disc brakes
347 - Radial tyres
395 - Electric temperature gauge -water
661 - Rubber mats replaced by carpet

The carpet one confused me as I thought Deluxe models came with carpet as standard?
Also the boot doesn't seem to have any badge or badge holes so it's possibly a replacement?
So, does anybody have any bright ideas to figure out the ignition key code?

Some times the key code is on a label fixed to the steering lock strap, it does mean you have to take the steering lock off to see it though!

Ah I see, so if I can undo the 2 shear-bolts and take the cast steering lock off the code may be in there.

The car is not at home at the moment so I can't look at it, is it a grinder job or a hammer and punch job?

The bolts aren't generally that tight so like you say a punch or sharp screw driver just so you can get a bite on the remaining head

The other option is I have a box of about 35 pre cut ignition keys!

Wow! Well I'll see if I can get the code first.

I've managed to get the code from the boot lock -166- so that's one down.
